Free AI: options, limits and who pays

You can access AI through a free chat allowance, a developer quota or a model running on your own equipment. Sponsored access is another possibility when a funded offer actually exists. Choose a route that fits your task, and check what happens when its allowance runs out.

Gyblos is in development. Its public marketplace, apps and free-access routes are not released.

Four ways access can be free to you

“Free” describes who pays for a particular use, not unlimited capacity or a promise that the same conditions will last. Check the official terms for your account, region and intended use.

Compare the access model before choosing a tool
RouteWho covers the cost? What you need to check
Chat allowanceThe service funds a limited amount of use.Available model and tools, message/file quotas, reset time and data policy.
Developer API quotaThe service funds an allowance for eligible projects.Project and region eligibility, token/request limits, billing activation and what happens at the cap.
Local open-weight modelYou supply equipment, power and setup time.Model licence, memory, software support, speed and whether features use remote services.
Sponsored inferenceSomeone funds an explicitly available offer.Who is eligible, what is funded, remaining allowance, expiry and the operator’s data policy.

Start with a task you can actually finish

For occasional drafting or study, try a chat allowance first. Test one non-sensitive task and confirm you can complete it within the message and file limits.

For software or an agent, inspect the API quota and define limits on calls, output and retries before connecting an automated workflow. A free chat account does not necessarily include API access.

If you already have suitable hardware and can maintain the software, a small local model may fit repeated work. Test quality and memory use on that equipment before purchasing anything. A sponsored route is useful only after you can verify a real, eligible offer.

  • Write down what counts as a useful result.
  • Try the same small task without private or customer data.
  • Record the allowance consumed and whether the result was usable.
  • Choose a fallback before the quota resets or disappears.

A worksheet for checking a free allowance

Fill this out from the service’s official documentation and what your account actually shows. Save the source and check date: published limits and account-specific limits can differ.

A local model still has a cost

A model can run without a per-request service charge and still consume power, hardware and your time. Memory needs vary with model size, precision, context and concurrent work. Check the exact model and engine rather than relying on download size alone.

Illustration: an average draw of 0.10 kW for 2 hours at 0.20 currency units per kWh costs 0.04 in that same currency. Formula: kW × hours × price per kWh. These are invented inputs for electricity alone, not a hardware benchmark, a local tariff or the total cost of running AI.

Use measured wall power and your actual tariff when estimating your own costs. Add equipment, cooling, maintenance and any paid remote features. Keep all amounts in one currency before comparing them.

Check privacy and rights before uploading

A free service may process your input on someone else’s servers. Read its current retention and data-use terms; do not assume that paid and free tiers have the same rules. Use public or synthetic inputs until you understand the conditions.

Local execution can keep inference on your machine when the chosen configuration actually runs locally. Downloads, cloud models, connectors and remote tools can have different data flows. “Open weights” does not by itself grant every commercial or redistribution right. Inspect the exact model licence.

Choose your next step

If an allowance fits your task, document the limits and keep a fallback. If it does not, compare a metered option with local execution using the same task and quality requirement. “No subscription” still means paying for what you use.
